Strangers on a Train

Initially conceived as a way of strengthening the ties between Discotheque and its Newcastle based sister group Disco - both groups sharing a fundamentally similar attitude to art practice and theory - by a literal and metaphorical linking using the intermediary train journey, it was quickly realised that this mobile site could also function as a conduit for an interesting additional purpose.

Taking the Hitchcock film 'Strangers on a Train', which is about two people 'swapping' murders in order to avoid detection, as a start point, the basic idea was to have three artists from London travelling north, each taking on board an artwork. These artists would exchange their works with those of three artists at the first stop, Peterborough. These received works would then be carried on the train until the next stop, Doncaster, where another three exchanges would take place. The process would then be repeated at York, and Newcastle.

Each artist would then have two days to add to or amend their 'swapped' artwork before the process of exchange was repeated on the return journey, with the works ultimately being returned to their original owners in a newly altered state.

This simple swapping procedure/structure was the only 'rule' - the rest was up to the participants' imaginations. Most of the artists were previously unknown to each other.
