Instructions
for participants
The
event took as a starting point the Hitchcock film 'Strangers on a
Train', which is about two people 'swapping' murders in order to
avoid detection. There are lots of visual allusions to the concept of
pairs of things in the film: the tennis crowd following the ball from
one side of the court to the other, the contrast of the personalities
of the two lead men, the contrast of their shoes at the start, etc.; and
then there's the visual props - the cigarette lighter, the carousel, the
spectacles. So dualism, pairing, opposites, exchange, split personalities
etc. were the basic ideas of the event.
Artists were invited to produce a work in any medium which
engaged with the theme of the project.
For the outward journey:
Each
artist made their way (with their artwork) to the agreed railway station
and to the platform where the train from London to Newcastle arrived.
When the train arrived, each artist went to the pre-arranged door of the
train, and exchanged their artwork with that of an artist onboard (who
was waiting at the same door). The artist onboard was in possession of
a work by an artist from the preceding station.
Each artist then had two days to make alterations/additions/amendments to
the work they had received, bearing in mind the theme of the project.
For
the return journey:
Each
artist made their way, with the work they have altered, back to the agreed
railway station and to the platform where the train from Newcastle to
London was due to arrive.
When the train arrived, each artist went to the pre-arranged door of the
train, and returned the work to an artist onboard (who was waiting at
the same door), in exchange for their own original work. The work given
to the artist onboard was then returned to its owner at the next station.
