Reflections on Strangers on a Train: Chris Croft

September 2005, Doncaster Station:

The reality sinks in that I may have travelled across the country to visit another entirely transient space. I am forced into the mould of frustrated traveller awaiting the arrival of persons hitherto unknown, people known only as Discotheque who have plotted an interchange of knowledge up the backbone of the country. The potential for error, exponential, but maybe there is no right or wrong in this situation. My confidence is low in the material I will pass on, it is further battered into submission by rigid concrete structures and overpriced muffins...

Exchange pleasantries with fellow "Doncaster" artist, the train arrives, exchanges take place, the machine is well oiled after getting this far north. I now realise that the development and evolution of ideas and the networking accompanying the exchange is the "real" essence of the project. The exchange is merely the stitch that binds this together. Am pleased to work for a couple of days on collaborative ideas rather than my own, the time frame necessitates structured practice and the sense of accomplishing a goal. All the time I am questioning the nature of work produced during such an exchange and imagining future work in this vein...

Return journey, more photos and excitement at receiving my developed concept. The results are great, already as I travel home I'm looking at my practice in new directions. Sometimes it takes someone else to realise what's been right in front of you all the time...
