The Glorious Twelfth: Guided Tours
Guided Tour by Dave Ball A highly subjective response to a particular urban context, the tour aimed to weave together factual and fictitious local histories of the area. Having been a settlement since Roman times, and having been the site of a Royal Dock since 1513, Deptford's historical significance is widely acknowledged. Its industrial ship-building past in particular has ensured that it remain a rich subject for local historians. What is less often acknowledged however is its former prominence in the world of hunting. At its peak in the eighteenth century enthusiasts from all over Europe would make the pilgrimage to Deptford to experience themselves its plentiful game and rich diversity of wildlife. The only clues to this now largely forgotten history are offered by the surviving names of local streets and public houses, some of which were visited as part of the tour. The tour started outside the front of Lewisham College (adjacent to Deptford Bridge Docklands Light Railway station).
