Coryat's Crudities: Emma Smith

Experiment
Emma was to spend an intensive day interviewing inhabitants of London on the street in order to explore their levels of awareness and knowledge of Nottingham. A series of cards would be produced, detailing the interviewees’ advice on how to get to Nottingham, and what attractions the city has to offer.
The mappers were then to be given the cards and invited to act upon them in order to test their validity, i.e. they would endeavour to travel to the city via the routes advised (no matter how illogical), and attempt to visit the attractions suggested, recording their successes and failures in the process.

Findings
Two sets of cards were produced. The first detailed the interviewees' travel advice, gave an indication on a map of Britain of where they imagined Nottingham to be, and suggested a place to visit in the city. The second was a set of cards listing places to visit in Nottingham, and giving the mappers a space to record directions, and a brief review of the sites.
By selecting a particular card from the first set the mappers were able to follow its travel advice and reach Nottingham without difficulty. Over the course of the weekend they managed to visit about half of the suggested places from the second set, filling out the cards in the process. The remaining locations either did not exist in Nottingham (e.g. "Madame Taussaud's"), were impossible to locate ("my friend"), or were simply too difficult to reach in the time allowed ("Sherwood Forest").
