Damn
Fine Cup of Coffee
A
group show and a series of related events, Damn Fine Cup of Coffee
took place in a large space in a studio block on Rowse Close in Stratford,
London, over the F-EST weekend of autumn 2004. The impetus for the show was provided by
Bruce Nauman's early investigations into just-what-it-is-an-artist-does,
and in particular his exploration of the studio as a space for the generation
(or lack of generation) of work.
Jonathan Allen, Dave Ball, Hannah
Brown, Dædalus, Lora Hemy, Jang Young Jo, Birgit Medele, Ana Moring, Ray
White.

"If
you see yourself as an artist and you function in a studio ... you
sit in a chair or pace around. And then the question goes back to
what is art? And art is what an artist does, just sitting around
the studio."
"I
didn't know what to do with all that time. There was nothing in
the studio because I didn't have much money for materials. So I
was forced to examine myself and what I was doing there. I was drinking
a lot of coffee, that's what I was doing."

Nauman 1994]
